The liver is arguably the most multi-skilled yet least appreciated organ in the human body – if it suddenly stopped working you would die within 24 hours without urgent medical attention. In short, you need to look after it. However, if current trends continue, Britain faces an epidemic of liver disease that threatens to eclipse that of diseases like breast cancer.
That’s according to a new report that has highlighted the lack of understanding regarding the effect of drinking on the liver.
The London Clinic Liver Report also found that half of all young adults in Britain first got drunk under the age of fifteen.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, a condition linked mainly with junk food diets, is also becoming a concern. The report highlights the mounting cost to the NHS and the danger from ‘hidden’ diseases like hepatitis C.
In this video consultant liver surgeon Professor Max Molago reveals more about the research.
